1632-1675
Johannes Vermeer, a master of light and domestic scenes, left an indelible mark on the Dutch Golden Age of painting.
Johannes Vermeer was baptized in Delft on October 31, 1632, to a Flemish mother, Digna Baltens, and a father, Reijnier Janszoon, who worked with silk and later became an art dealer. The family moved to Delft, fleeing religious persecution and economic collapse in Antwerp. Vermeer's early life and training are not well-documented, but it's believed he may have apprenticed with Carel Fabritius or Abraham Bloemaert. His father's connections likely influenced his artistic development.
Vermeer married Catharina Bolnes in 1653, a Catholic woman from a wealthier family, and converted to Catholicism. He became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1653 and was elected head of the guild multiple times. Vermeer's career was marked by financial struggles, and he relied on patrons like Pieter van Ruijven and his wife, Maria de Knuijt. He produced relatively few paintings, working slowly and with great care. Vermeer's life was cut short in 1675, leaving his wife in debt.
Vermeer is renowned for his masterful use of light and his depiction of domestic scenes. His paintings often feature women engaged in everyday activities, set in two small rooms in his house in Delft. He used expensive pigments and worked slowly, producing around three paintings a year. Vermeer's style was influenced by the fijnschilders from Leiden and artists like Gerard Dou. His use of light and composition created a sense of intimacy and tranquility in his works.
Vermeer's life was marked by modest celebrity during his lifetime, but he fell into obscurity after his death. He was rediscovered in the 19th century by Gustav Friedrich Waagen and Théophile Thoré-Bürger, who attributed 66 works to him. Today, only 34 paintings are universally attributed to Vermeer. One of his most famous works, 'Girl with a Pearl Earring,' is an iconic example of his skill in capturing light and expression.
Vermeer's influence on art is immense, with artists like Adriaan Waiboer and Gabriel Metsu drawing inspiration from his work. His reputation has grown enormously since his rediscovery in the 19th century. Vermeer's paintings can be seen in museums like the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Mauritshuis in The Hague. His legacy as a master of light and domestic scenes continues to captivate art lovers to this day.
