Édouard Manet · 1873

Manet's wife reads under a veil that shields her from wind and sand, while his brother lounges beside her gazing at the beach. There is real sand in the paint: this summer afternoon was caught on the spot in 1873.
Manet painted On the Beach during the family's summer holiday of 1873 at Berck, then little more than a fishing village on the Channel coast. With him were his wife Suzanne, his brother Eugène and his mother; Suzanne's son Léon Leenhoff was away on military service. It was the family's first holiday by the sea after the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. Because grains of sand were found in the paint, art historians believe Manet painted it outdoors, though some parts, such as the background, may have been finished later in his Paris studio.
The two figures nearly fill the picture from edge to edge, each forming a triangle. Suzanne, seen from the side and slightly from behind, wears a long light-grey coat and a white hat with a black band; a pale veil falls over her face, which bends toward a book. Eugène half reclines, propped on his left forearm, legs stretched toward the sea, in dark clothes with a blue and white striped shirt. Behind them lie turquoise, foam-capped water and sailing boats near a high horizon. Eugène's shadow, falling to the right, suggests afternoon. The signature Manet is at lower right.
The two people do not interact. John Leighton noted that Manet's attention went to nuances of mood, posture and personality, and to his urge to hold on to a fleeting moment. Françoise Cachin compared it with Monet's beach scenes at Trouville and found Manet's view more monumental and focused, with the influence of Japanese prints in the high horizon and flat figures. Manet also borrowed from his own work: Eugène takes almost the same pose as in Luncheon on the Grass of 1863, again dark clothes beside a woman in light.
Through his friend Théodore Duret, Manet sold the painting only weeks after finishing it, on 8 November 1873, to the collector Henri Rouart. After Rouart's death it was auctioned in Paris in 1912, and later entered the collection of the fashion designer Jacques Doucet, who had a striking red and black lacquered Art Deco frame made for it, the frame in which it is still shown. His nephew Jean-Édouard Dubrujeaud gave it to the Louvre in 1953, and since 1986 it has belonged to the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
