卵を調理する老女 - Diego Velázquez

An old woman bends over the eggs she is cooking while a boy waits in the shadows. In Seville, the young Velázquez turned a kitchen into a stage for light.

The story behind the painting

Diego Velázquez painted this scene during his Seville period, before his definitive move to Madrid in 1623. The exact date is not known; it is thought to be around the turn of 1618. In these early years he often painted working-class people, in many cases using members of his own family as models. The old woman here is no exception to that habit of recurring faces: she also appears in his Christ in the House of Martha and Mary of 1618. Even the title is uncertain. Some argue that the eggs are not being fried but poached, which is why the painting is known as Old Woman Frying Eggs, Old Woman Cooking Eggs or Old Woman Poaching Eggs.

What to look for

Follow the light. It enters strongly from the left and falls on the woman, her utensils and the eggs cooking in front of her, while the background and the boy standing to her right sink into deep shadow. The chiaroscuro is so intense that the lower wall would be invisible were it not for the basket hanging on it. Yet within this murky darkness and high contrast, Velázquez works with subtle hues and a palette dominated by ochres and browns. The composition is arranged as an oval, with the central figures in the nearest plane, so the scene seems to open toward us and draw us in, as if we were standing at the edge of the table.

Meaning and intent

Paintings like this are classed as genre scenes and still life together: everyday life shown with the care usually reserved for grander subjects. Velázquez gives an ordinary act, cooking eggs, the seriousness of a sacred image, through the weight of light and the solidity of the objects. The sources do not spell out a hidden symbolism, and they record no fixed meaning for the exchange between the woman and the boy, so it is best to let the picture speak plainly. What they do make clear is the ambition: a young painter using humble people and simple things to show what he could do with light, shadow, texture and space.

Legacy

Old Woman Frying Eggs is considered one of the strongest of Velázquez's early works. It now hangs in the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh, part of National Galleries Scotland, and Wikidata also records it as having belonged to the Cook collection. The picture shows the influence of chiaroscuro on the young artist, a lesson he would carry with him to Madrid and beyond. For visitors today it offers a rare chance to meet the future court painter at the very beginning, in a kitchen rather than a palace. Its pleasure is in slow looking: the gleam of a vessel, the eggs in the dish, the boy half lost in darkness, all held in a single beam of light.
