Courbet painted a woman at full length, large as life and strangely intimate. Her husband turned the portrait down: it did not, he felt, show her beauty.
Madame Auguste Cuoq is an oil on canvas by Gustave Courbet, painted somewhere between 1852 and 1857. Its sitter was Mathilde Desportes, known as Madame Auguste Cuoq, a woman who often sat for portraits and was painted by several notable artists of the time, including Courbet and Jean-Jacques Henner. These were the years when Courbet was making his name as a Realist, painting ordinary people and subjects on the scale of grand painting, and in 1855 he set up his own independent Pavilion of Realism to show his work.
The canvas is tall and large, about 176.5 by 108 cm, giving the sitter full presence in the room. The source points to what makes it unusual: its large scale is combined with an intimate setting. Rather than the public grandeur that such a size usually announces, the picture offers a private, close encounter with one woman. As you stand before it, notice that tension between the scale of an official portrait and the quiet closeness of its mood.
The portrait raises a question about whose idea of a person a painting should show. Courbet painted it, but the sitter's husband rejected it, feeling that it did not capture his wife's beauty. That refusal tells us something about Courbet's approach: he was known for unidealised subjects, and what a painter saw as truthful a client might see as unflattering. Because of its scale and intimacy, the work has been described as one of Courbet's most unusual paintings.
Although it was refused, Courbet displayed it at an exhibition of his own in 1867. It was later acquired by Louisine Havemeyer, and the Havemeyer Collection donated it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where it remains. So a portrait turned down by the person who might have treasured it most found a lasting home where many visitors can meet Madame Cuoq. Standing before her, each viewer can decide whether Courbet's frank, large and intimate image does her justice.
