Joaquín Sorolla · 1917

A young king stands life-size in a park, his red hussar's jacket blazing in the sun. Joaquín Sorolla painted Alfonso XIII at La Granja, and you can feel the summer light on every button, leaf and boot.
King Alfonso XIII of Spain commissioned this portrait from Joaquín Sorolla, and it was painted in the park of the royal summer residence of La Granja de San Ildefonso. The French Wikipedia article dates it 1907, and the signature reads J. Sorolla B. 1907 San Ildefonso, but Wikidata gives 1917. The king was 21 in the 1907 dating, married the year before to the British princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg. The oil on canvas measures 208 by 108.5 cm and remains in the Spanish royal collection.
The king faces us full length and life size, left leg forward, right hand on his hip, left hand resting on the pommel of a sabre whose scabbard reaches the ground. He wears the uniform of the Pavia Hussars: a red dolman covered with gold braid and buttons, a blue pelisse lined with black fur over the left shoulder, blue trousers, black riding boots with a silver spur, and a gold-embroidered sash. Medals cover the dolman and pelisse. His only jewel is his wedding ring.
Though no sky is visible, sunlight is the real subject of the picture. Sorolla uses light and reflections throughout to suggest a strong sun: on the leaves of the trees, the ground in the foreground, the clothes, the boots, the face and hands of the king. Even the intense colour of the uniform conveys the power of daylight. The king shows no visible attributes of his office, only medals and his uniform, so the portrait feels less like a throne-room image than a young man standing outdoors in summer.
The work belongs to the royal collection of Spain, held by Patrimonio Nacional. It is described as painted in the colourful and luminous style of Spanish post-impressionism, and it is a clear example of the light-filled painting Sorolla was known for, here applied to an official royal portrait. The painting appears in several books and exhibition catalogues on Sorolla, including a Prado catalogue of 2009 and a 2018 study of Sorolla and fashion, which suits a picture so attentive to every braid and button.
